Day One: Self-drive to your accommodation destination for the evening – the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge nestled at the base of the Glasgow Range and overlooking a bend in the mighty Mokihinui River right at the northern terminus of The Old Ghost Road. The Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge features deeply comfortable accommodations, extensive decks, a large stone fireplace and dining tables hand-hewn from native woods milled onsite. Your hosts provide a hearty two course meal and tales of The Old Ghost Road. Local beer and wine is available for purchase.

Day Two: Having fueled up with breakfast, wander down to the helipad on the doorstep of the Lodge and meet your helicopter transport for a breathtaking flight over much of the country you will ride through later in the day. Disembarking some 1200 vertical metres higher than the Lodge at the awe-inspiring setting of Ghost Lake, run through your final gear checks, take some time to soak up your remarkable surrounds and then set yourself for an epic mountain biking day assault! The adventure starts immediately as you descend rapidly on narrow and technical track for several kilometres beyond Ghost Lake. Feel on top of the world as you pick your way along Skyline Ridge and give your backside a quick breather as you descend the Skyline Steps before sailing on down to Stern Valley hut and a refuel. From Stern Valley hut, make your way up Earnest Valley and then knuckle down for a short grind up through the ‘Boneyard’ to gain Solemn Saddle and another epic flowing descent down the ‘Hanging Judge’ and the Goat Creek valley to the confluence with the Mokihinui River South Branch. The pace stays high as you weave your way through majestic rainforest on the terraces of the Mokihinui River South Branch. From Specimen Point hut, you enter the top of the Mokihinui Gorge and yet another dramatic landscape change – this time hillside-hugging trail for the final 17km out to the track end and the well-deserved comforts of the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge. Get the salt and carbohydrate levels back up with some outstanding home made pizza and local beer before showering up and preparing for a sumptuous sit-down dinner. Having retired for the evening, replay the day’s experience and huge variety of landscapes before plunging into a well-deserved sleep.

Day Three After a good night’s rest and recovery, your hosts will provide a leisurely full cooked breakfast and bid you farewell for your safe onward travel.
