OLD GHOST ADVENTURES – TUMBLER
2 Day/2 Night
Hike or Bike and Raft
Treat yourself to four dramatic perspectives on one of New Zealand’s grandest wilderness rivers – the Mokihinui. Hike or bike 17 km’s up the majestic Mokihinui Gorge to your accommodation for the evening – the spectacularly sited Specimen Point hut. Here, your overnight gear and raft will rendezvous with you. Your surplus gear (including bikes) will be returned to the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge while a delicious backcountry dinner is prepared for you courtesy of your rafting guides. Awake on Day 2 to a nourishing breakfast and coffee, before a walk along The Old Ghost Road to the raft ‘put-in’. The adventure starts immediately with the Mokihinui River providing the way for a tumbling ride back down through the Gorge to the Rough and Tumble Lodge where you shower, dine, relax and stay.

Self-drive to the northern end of The Old Ghost Road and having deposited your overnight gear in safe keeping at the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge, begin your hiking or biking journey up the rugged Mokihinui Gorge, arriving at your overnight destination – the Specimen Point hut – at a pre-agreed time. Here you will be met by your rafting guides and overnight gear (all arriving by helicopter) with any surplus equipment such as mountain bikes being flown back out for overnight safe-keeping. Your rafting guides will whip up a hearty backcountry dinner while you relax on the hut deck and contemplate the mighty Mokihinui River – right down in front of you – and the course of your adventure the following day.
After a tasty hut breakfast and coffee, warm up with a gentle 3km stroll along the Old Ghost Road to the ‘Mokihinui Forks’ and your rafting put in. From here, it’s straight into it as you run a Grade 4 rapid and then settle into predominantly Grade 3+ rafting for the length of the Mokihinui Gorge. Pull in down the gorge for a picnic lunch before resuming your wild ride, using rare flat sections of river to marvel at The Old Ghost Road (your passage up the Gorge the previous day) hugging the hillside high to your left. Get excited as float on by and pull out just below the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge – your dining and accommodation destination for the evening. Enjoy a warm shower and pre-dinner drink as you process your thoughts about the dramatic perspectives of land and water passages up and down the Mokihinui Gorge. Following a delicious dinner at the Lodge, have one more tipple before turning in for a sweet and deep sleep.
After a good night’s rest and recovery, your hosts will provide a leisurely full cooked breakfast and bid you farewell for your safe onward travel.
