Day One:

Self-drive to your accommodation destination for the evening – the Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge nestled at the base of the Glasgow Range and overlooking a bend in the mighty Mokihinui River right at the northern terminus of The Old Ghost Road. The Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge features deeply comfortable accommodations, extensive decks, a large stone fireplace and dining tables hand-hewn from native woods milled onsite. Your hosts provide a hearty meal and tales of The Old Ghost Road. Local beer and wine is available for purchase.

Day Two:

After breakfast and an equipment check, you will be met by your helicopter pilot on the doorstep of the Lodge who will load your gear and packed lunches and take you on a scenic flight up the Mokihinui Gorge and into the South Branch of the Mokihinui River. Depending on your preference for exertion, you will be dropped at a designated point so you can begin the self-propelled part of your day. Most will enjoy the 17km walk back from Specimen Point Hut, during which you will be treated to wide open vistas, dramatic cantilevered bridges over earthquake slips, old gold workings, tranquil bush and the constant presence of the wild and pure Mokihinui River. You are near your destination upon encountering County Hill, the only notable hill of the day, which involves a steep but short climb before dropping into the aptly named Welcome Bay. Rough and Tumble Bush Lodge, just downstream, is again your accommodations for the evening and you need not lift a finger (except perhaps to put a beer or wine to your lips) as dinner is served and a restful night’s sleep awaits.

Day Three

After a good night’s rest and recovery, your hosts will provide a leisurely full cooked breakfast and bid you farewell for your safe onward travel.
